In early 2021 I hope to launch a brand new course – SQL for Sports.
SQL (pronounced sequel) is one of the most widely used programming languages in the world and it’s primary function is to retrieve data from databases. This short video explainer is one of the best explanations I’ve seen of SQL. I’ve been using SQL for over 10 years now and have always wanted to put together a course to show others how useful databases can be in managing your data.
Why learn SQL? A quick job search on LinkedIn, for example, will show you that more companies are looking for SQL skills than are looking for Python or R skills.
Before launching the online version of the course, I’d like to run a virtual face-to-face course over 4 weeks. Places will be limited to a maximum of 20 people and there will be a small charge for this. Anyone who partakes in the face-to-face version will get free access to the online course once it’s launched. This iteration of the course will give you a chance to learn SQL in a ‘classroom’ setting and gives me a chance to fine tune the material.
What will we cover?
This will be an introduction to SQL course. The course assumes no prior knowledge of SQL (or even coding), although some experience of working with data in excel or similar is advisable.
We will start from the beginning and look at why have a database in the first place. How to retrieve data from a table, how to filter and sort, how to aggregate data (sum, min, max, avg), how to join data from multiple tables and how to insert new data.
A sample database will be supplied – this will be based on football data, but it’s not a football course, so even a basic understanding of the sport is sufficient.
At the end of the course you should have a solid understanding of the importance and advantages of a database over file based systems like excel. You will be able to query, filter and retrieve data.
Who should attend?
If you have an interest in learning a new skill, work with data but currently manage everything in excel and want to understand more about what best practice looks like then this course will be for you.
Although SQL is a coding language it is one of the simpler one’s to learn. So even if you have no prior coding experience you shouldn’t be put off by learning SQL.
When is it on?
The course will run for 4 weeks, starting on Thursday 7th January and each Thursday for a total of 4 weeks. Class will run from 8pm – 9pm (CET). The classes will not be recorded so attendance is required at the specified times. For those interested I ask that you are available for at least 3 out of the 4 sessions.

€19.99 – You will also get free access to the online course when it is launched. All other software you need is free and sample data will be provided.
Course Deliver
The course will be delivered over Google Meet and all materials will be provided. Software required will work on both PC and Mac.
