WORLD CUP 2026: GOAL SCORING EFFICIENCY AND DEFENSIVE CONTROL (Part 3)
Introduction
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations analysis began with a relatively simple question: Did the teams that scored the most goals also create the strongest attacking process?
Across the three-part AFCON series, goals scored were examined alongside Big Chances Created, Big Chances Missed and Big Chances Scored. The findings demonstrated that tournament football could not be explained by goal totals alone. Some teams produced high-quality opportunities consistently but lacked the finishing efficiency required to maximise them. Others scored efficiently from a smaller number of chances but lacked the attacking volume needed to sustain a deep tournament run.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup series extended the same framework to a larger and more varied competition. The expanded tournament involved 48 teams and 104 matches, providing a broader sample through which attacking production, finishing efficiency and defensive control could be assessed.
Part 1 examined the group stage, while Part 2 profiled the teams that progressed into the knockout phase. The earlier analysis identified teams with strong underlying processes, teams relying heavily on execution and teams whose attacking strengths were being undermined by defensive exposure.
Part 3 evaluates the completed tournament. Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final on 19 July 2026, while England defeated France 6-4 to finish third. Spain completed the tournament having conceded only one goal.
Central Question
The answer requires more than a final league table. It requires a comparison of process, execution and defensive control across the tournament’s leading teams.
Method
The analysis used final team totals from FotMob, supplemented by FIFA’s official tournament results and final standings. The principal attacking variables were Goals Scored, Expected Goals, Big Chances Created, Big Chances Missed and Big Chances Scored. The defensive variables were Goals Conceded and Expected Goals Conceded.
The following calculations were used throughout the report:
- Big Chances Scored = Big Chances Created – Big Chances Missed
- Big-Chance Conversion Rate = Big Chances Scored / Big Chances Created
- Big-Chance Goal Contribution = Big Chances Scored / Total Goals Scored
- Goal Overperformance = Goals Scored – Expected Goals
- Defensive Overperformance = Goals Conceded – Expected Goals Conceded
For defensive overperformance, a negative value indicates that a team conceded fewer goals than expected. A positive value indicates that it conceded more goals than its xGA total suggested.
Median values were used as comparative benchmarks during the earlier team-profiling stages. For the completed tournament, the benchmark charts use the overall tournament conversion and goal-share rates, while the xG and xGA charts use zero as the expectation line.
Linear regression was used to examine the relationship between Big Chances Created and Goals Scored, and between Expected Goals Conceded and Goals Conceded. The coefficient of determination (R²) expresses how much of the variation in the outcome variable is associated with the explanatory variable. It does not establish causation.
Data Note
The charts and calculations use FotMob’s final team totals captured on 20 July 2026. Minor differences may occur if the data provider later reclassifies individual chances or shots.
Overall Tournament Context
The 104 matches produced 308 goals, equivalent to approximately 2.96 goals per match. Across the 48 teams, 466 big chances were created and 182 were converted.
The overall big-chance conversion rate was 39.1%. Big chances accounted for 182 of the tournament’s 308 goals, meaning 59.1% of all goals came from opportunities classified as big chances.
The tournament therefore combined a high volume of clear opportunities with substantial scoring from other shot types, set pieces and moments of individual quality. This is important because a team’s big-chance profile describes a major part of its attacking process, but not the whole of its scoring output.
The Relationship Between Big Chances and Goals
The final relationship between Goals Scored and Big Chances Created produced an R² of 0.793. Approximately 79% of the variation in team goal totals was therefore associated with differences in big-chance creation.
Figure 1 shows that the strongest scoring teams were generally positioned toward the upper-right of the distribution. England and France jointly led the tournament with 33 big chances and 20 goals, while Spain, Argentina, Norway and Brazil formed the next cluster of high-volume creators.
The relationship became stronger as the competition progressed. The earlier group-stage model had produced an R² of approximately 0.62; the completed tournament provided a larger sample of team outcomes and a clearer separation between teams that repeatedly reached high-quality positions and those that did not.
However, approximately 21% of the variation remained outside the model. Finishing quality, penalties, set pieces, goals from lower-probability shots, opposition strength, match state and goalkeeping all influenced how much each team gained from its attacking process.
Defensive Relationship and Outcome Variability
The relationship between Expected Goals Conceded and actual Goals Conceded was more moderate, producing an R² of 0.547. In other words, xGA explained a meaningful share of defensive outcomes, but the variation was considerably greater than in the attacking big-chance model.
Figure 2 includes a parity line. Teams below that line conceded fewer goals than expected, while teams above it conceded more. Spain were the clearest elite example of defensive overperformance: one goal conceded from 2.4 xGA. England, France, Norway and Senegal finished above the parity line, meaning their actual defensive outcomes were worse than the quality of chances allowed suggested.
The weaker relationship reflects the greater influence of finishing and goalkeeping at the defensive end. Two teams can allow chances of similar expected value but record very different goals-conceded totals depending on the quality of opposition finishing, goalkeeper performance, shot placement and the timing of errors.
Final Tournament Comparison
The final comparison brings together the four semi-finalists and six other teams whose profiles illustrate different combinations of attacking volume, finishing efficiency and defensive execution.
Spain’s championship profile is immediately distinct: They scored fewer goals than the other semi-finalists but conceded dramatically fewer. England and France produced the highest chance-creation volumes, while Argentina gained more from finishing outside the big-chance model.
Benchmarking the Leading Teams
Big-Chance Conversion
The tournament-wide conversion benchmark was 39.1%. Figure 3 shows that Mexico, Belgium and Spain converted a considerably higher share of their big chances. Argentina and France fell below the benchmark despite reaching the final four.
Conversion efficiency improved the value of a team’s attacking process, but did not independently determine progression. Mexico recorded the highest rate in this group yet exited in the Round of 16. France created far more chances than Mexico but converted a smaller percentage, demonstrating the trade-off between volume and efficiency.
Dependence on Big Chances
Figure 4 measures the proportion of each team’s total goals that came from big chances. The tournament benchmark was 59.1%. Spain, Brazil, Mexico and Belgium depended heavily on high-quality opportunities, while Argentina obtained a much larger share of their scoring from chances outside the big-chance classification.
This distinction matters when interpreting output. A high big-chance goal share can indicate that a team consistently created clear openings, but it can also reveal limited scoring from lower-probability shots. Argentina’s lower share illustrates how execution beyond the clearest opportunities supported their run to the final.
Output ≈ Expectation
Attacking Output Relative to Expectation
Figure 5 summarises how much the selected teams scored above or below xG. England and Argentina recorded the largest positive differences, while Spain and Brazil scored below expectation.
The figure reinforces why goal totals alone can be misleading. England’s 20 goals were supported by the strongest attacking overperformance in the comparison. Spain became champions despite scoring fewer goals than their xG total suggested, because their defensive process reduced the need for attacking overperformance.
Defensive Output Relative to Expectation
Figure 6 places the defensive performances on the same expectation framework. Negative values are favourable because they indicate that a team conceded fewer goals than xGA suggested. Spain and Morocco recorded the strongest defensive overperformance in the selected group, while England, Argentina, Norway and France conceded more than expected.
This chart is the clearest visual explanation of the final outcome. Spain did not need to match England or France for attacking volume because their defensive advantage was substantially larger than the attacking disadvantage.
The Final Four
Spain: Defensive Control Became the Difference
Spain scored 14 goals from 15.6 xG, an attacking underperformance of 1.6 goals. They created 24 big chances, scored 12 and converted 50%. Twelve of their 14 goals came from big chances.
Their decisive advantage was defensive. Spain conceded only one goal from 2.4 xGA and recorded seven clean sheets. They defeated Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-final, France 2-0 in the semi-final and Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final.
Spain were not the tournament’s most explosive attacking team. They were its most controlled team. Because their defence reduced the number of goals required to win, the attack did not need to outperform its process in every match.
Argentina: Execution Carried the Attack
Argentina scored 19 goals from 14.6 xG, an overperformance of 4.4 goals. They created 22 big chances but converted only seven, producing a 31.8% conversion rate. Only 36.8% of their total goals came from big chances.
Argentina therefore gained substantial value from goals outside the clearest opportunities. This supported a 3-1 extra-time quarter-final victory over Switzerland and a 2-1 semi-final victory over England. In the final, however, Spain restricted the quality and volume of Argentina’s shooting opportunities, removing the platform for another decisive moment of overperformance.
England: The Strongest Attack, but Not the Strongest Team
England jointly led the tournament with 33 big chances and scored 20 goals. They converted 14, producing a 42.4% rate, and exceeded their 14.3 xG by 5.7 goals.
The attacking profile combined volume and execution, but the defence was less sustainable. England conceded 12 goals from 9.3 xGA, including two in the semi-final defeat to Argentina and four in the 6-4 bronze-final victory over France.
France: Elite Creation, Inconsistent Conversion
France also created 33 big chances and scored 20 goals. They recorded the highest xG total among the selected teams at 17.5, but missed 21 big chances and converted only 36.4%, slightly below the tournament benchmark.
France’s attacking process was elite, but the team did not consistently maximise it. The 2-0 semi-final defeat to Spain and the 6-4 bronze-final defeat to England showed how missed opportunities and defensive instability could undermine even the strongest creation profile.
Other Notable Team Performances
Belgium: High Efficiency From Lower Volume
Belgium scored 14 goals from 10.9 xG and converted eight of 15 big chances. Their 53.3% conversion rate was well above the tournament benchmark, but their chance volume was less than half the totals recorded by England and France. Belgium’s execution carried them to the quarter-finals, where Spain won 2-1.
Norway: Attacking Breakthrough, Defensive Risk
Norway created 22 big chances and scored 13 goals from 10.1 xG. Their attacking volume matched Argentina and Brazil, but they conceded 11 goals from 9.2 xGA. The combination produced an exciting but less controlled profile. Norway eliminated Brazil before losing to England after extra time in the quarter-final.
Morocco: Another Balanced African Performance
Morocco scored 10 goals from 8.5 xG and converted seven of 17 big chances. They conceded six goals from 7.8 xGA, finishing 1.8 goals better than expectation. Their quarter-final run was built on balance rather than extreme overperformance at either end.
Switzerland: Output Closely Matched the Process
Switzerland scored 10 goals from 9.7 xG and conceded six from 6.2 xGA. Their attacking and defensive outputs were both close to expectation. The quarter-final appearance therefore reflected a stable process, but not the exceptional execution needed to overcome Argentina.
Brazil: Strong Process Without Sufficient Reward
Brazil created 22 big chances and scored nine of them, but finished with 10 goals from 12.0 xG. Their attack generated a credible process without receiving its full expected reward. The 2-1 Round-of-16 defeat to Norway illustrated how knockout variance can eliminate a team even when the broader process is competitive.
Mexico: Exceptional Finishing With Limited Volume
Mexico scored 10 goals from only 6.7 xG and converted eight of 13 big chances. Their 61.5% conversion rate was the highest among the selected teams. The profile was extremely efficient but built on moderate chance volume, and England’s greater attacking pressure eventually produced a 3-2 Round-of-16 victory.
African Teams: Competitive Attack, Uneven Defensive and Late-Game Control
The 10 African representatives scored 53 goals from 46.5 xG and converted 32 of 77 big chances, producing a combined conversion rate of 41.6%, slightly above the tournament benchmark of 39.1%. However, they conceded 64 goals from 58.7 xGA, with several knockout eliminations shaped by late defensive collapses and the concession of decisive big chances.
Morocco produced Africa’s strongest overall performance, scoring 10 goals from 8.5 xG and converting seven of 17 big chances (41.2%). They also conceded six goals from 7.8 xGA, combining regular chance creation with defensive overperformance. Their attack was eventually restricted in a 2–0 quarter-final defeat to France, but they remained the continent’s only representative to sustain a deep knockout run.
Senegal also scored 10 goals, exceeding their 8.8 xG, but converted only six of 16 big chances (37.5%). Their principal weakness was defensive, conceding nine goals from 5.9 xGA. This underperformance culminated against Belgium, when Senegal surrendered a 2–0 lead with fewer than ten minutes remaining and lost 3–2 after extra time. All three Belgian goals came from big chances, illustrating Senegal’s inability to prevent high-quality opportunities while protecting a late lead.
Egypt scored eight goals from 6.0 xG and converted four of ten big chances (40%). They conceded seven goals from 8.2 xGA, suggesting a generally respectable defensive outcome across the tournament. However, their elimination exposed a late-game weakness: Egypt led Argentina 2–0 with fewer than 15 minutes remaining, but conceded three late goals, including the decisive strike from a big chance, to lose 3–2.
Ivory Coast scored five goals from 5.5 xG and converted four of ten big chances (40%). They also conceded four goals from 5.3 xGA, producing a relatively balanced underlying profile. However, missing six big chances reduced their attacking reward, while Erling Haaland converted a late big chance to give Norway a 2–1 Round-of-32 victory.
DR Congo scored five goals from 4.2 xG and converted three of five big chances, producing Africa’s highest conversion rate at 60%. Their main limitation was low attacking volume, which left little margin for defensive error. They competed strongly against England but conceded twice during the final 15 minutes to lose 2–1.
Algeria scored five goals from 4.6 xG and converted three of eight big chances (37.5%). Their attack slightly exceeded expectation, but conceding nine goals from 5.8 xGA showed substantial defensive underperformance. They were unable to produce another attacking response in their final match, losing 2–0 to Switzerland.
Cape Verde scored four goals from 3.0 xG, despite converting only one of three big chances (33.3%). Their scoring therefore included significant output from lower-quality opportunities. They conceded five goals from 7.1 xGA and twice recovered against Argentina, but a late extra-time goal ended their campaign in a 3–2 defeat.
Ghana scored two goals from 2.3 xG and converted two of four big chances (50%). They conceded three goals from 4.5 xGA, indicating positive defensive execution, but their low attacking volume limited their ability to recover after falling behind. A single goal was therefore enough for Colombia to eliminate them 1–0.
South Africa scored two goals from 2.7 xG and converted one of two big chances (50%). They conceded four goals from 4.8 xGA, producing a relatively balanced defensive return, but lacked sustained attacking threat. Their campaign ended after conceding a stoppage-time winner in a 1–0 defeat to Canada.
Tunisia scored two goals from only 0.9 xG and converted one of two big chances (50%), reflecting attacking overperformance from very limited creation. However, they conceded 12 goals from 5.3 xGA, the weakest defensive outcome among the African teams, and exited during the group stage after three defeats.
Overall, African teams displayed credible attacking efficiency, but late-game control emerged as a major limitation. Senegal and Egypt lost two-goal leads, while Ivory Coast, DR Congo, Cape Verde and South Africa also conceded decisive goals during the closing stages. The issue was therefore not simply creating or converting chances; several teams competed effectively for long periods but struggled to prevent high-quality opportunities when protecting a lead or level score. Morocco progressed furthest because they combined productive chance creation with more sustainable defensive control.
Discussion
Chance Creation Remained the Foundation
The attacking R² of 0.793 demonstrates that teams creating more big chances generally scored more goals. England and France jointly led the tournament with 33 big chances each and reached the final four, while Spain produced sufficient attacking volume to become champions. Argentina created fewer big chances than the leading European attacks but compensated through substantial finishing overperformance.
Brazil’s elimination does not invalidate this relationship. Correlation describes the overall tournament pattern but does not guarantee that the team producing the stronger attacking process will win every knockout match. Brazil generated 22 big chances and 12.0 xG but scored only 10 goals, showing how underperformance in decisive moments can outweigh an otherwise productive process.
Execution Separated Teams With Similar Processes
Teams with similar chance-creation numbers often experienced different outcomes because of conversion efficiency. England and France both created 33 big chances and scored 20 goals, although their conversion rates and defensive outcomes differed. Argentina and Norway both created 22, yet Argentina scored six more goals and progressed to the final.
Belgium and Mexico created fewer big chances than several eliminated teams but obtained considerable value from conversion rates above 50%. Conversely, teams such as Brazil created regularly without receiving the expected scoring return.
Execution therefore influenced how efficiently teams transformed their attacking process into tournament progress. However, the most efficient finishers did not necessarily become champions. Efficiency without sufficient chance volume remained vulnerable, while attacking output without defensive control was difficult to sustain across multiple knockout rounds.
Late-Game Control Shaped Knockout Outcomes
Late goals were also a major factor in determining progression. Several teams competed effectively for most of their knockout matches but conceded decisive goals after the 75th minute. This demonstrated that full-match xG, xGA and big-chance totals could not completely explain outcomes without considering when decisive opportunities occurred.
The pattern was particularly damaging for African teams. Senegal led Belgium 2–0 with fewer than ten minutes remaining, but conceded three goals from big chances and lost 3–2 after extra time. Egypt also surrendered a 2–0 lead against Argentina, conceding in the 79th, 83rd and 90+2 minutes. Ivory Coast equalised against Norway before Erling Haaland converted a big chance in the 86th minute, while DR Congo, Cape Verde and South Africa also conceded decisive goals during the closing stages of their elimination matches.
Late-game vulnerability was not limited to African representatives. Japan led Brazil before Gabriel Martinelli’s 90+5-minute winner completed a 2–1 comeback. The Netherlands were leading Morocco until a 90+1-minute equaliser forced extra time and an eventual penalty-shootout defeat. Portugal were eliminated by a late Spanish winner, while Belgium’s campaign ended when Spain scored in the 88th minute of their quarter-final.
These results indicate that knockout success depended not only on creating and converting chances but also on protecting favourable match states. Fatigue, substitutions, concentration, defensive spacing and decision-making under pressure affected whether teams could prevent the final high-quality opportunity. A competitive process could therefore be undone by one late big chance.
Spain Won Through Balance and Match Control
Spain did not dominate every attacking category. They ranked behind England and France for Big Chances Created and behind the other three semi-finalists for total goals. Their 14 goals were also below their 15.6 xG, indicating that their title was not primarily driven by attacking overperformance.
Nevertheless, Spain combined sufficient chance creation, above-benchmark big-chance conversion and exceptional defensive control. England required 20 goals to finish third, France scored 20 and finished fourth, while Argentina scored 19 and lost the final. Spain needed only 14 because they conceded once throughout the tournament.
Spain were also effective during decisive match periods. They remained patient before scoring late winners against Portugal and Belgium, while Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute goal decided the final against Argentina. Rather than losing structure as matches progressed, Spain continued to restrict opposition opportunities while maintaining enough attacking pressure to produce decisive moments.
Their success therefore represented the tournament’s strongest balance between process, execution and game-state management. Spain created enough high-quality chances, defended more effectively than any other team and maintained control during the closing stages when several opponents experienced decisive breakdowns.
Tournament Synthesis
Conclusion
The 2026 FIFA World Cup reinforced the central argument of this series: Goals represent the final outcome, while Chance creation, Finishing efficiency, Defensive execution and Match control explain how those outcomes were produced.
Big Chances Created accounted for approximately 79% of the variation in team goal totals, confirming that sustained access to high-quality opportunities remained the foundation of attacking performance. However, chance volume alone did not determine tournament progression. Argentina reached the final through substantial attacking overperformance (a certain KEY player being a huge factor), while England and France generated the greatest attacking volume but conceded too frequently to convert that production into the title. Belgium and Mexico demonstrated the value of clinical finishing, whereas Brazil showed that a strong attacking process could still be undermined by inefficient execution.
Late-game control also emerged as a decisive knockout factor. Senegal and Egypt surrendered two-goal leads, while Ivory Coast, DR Congo, Cape Verde and South Africa conceded decisive late goals. The same pattern affected Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium, demonstrating that this was not limited to African teams. In several cases, one late big chance overturned an otherwise competitive performance and ended a team’s tournament.
The African representatives collectively produced encouraging attacking numbers, scoring 53 goals from 46.5 xG and recording a 41.6% big-chance conversion rate. Morocco progressed furthest because they combined regular chance creation with more sustainable defensive and game-state control. Other African teams often matched opponents for long periods but struggled to prevent high-quality chances during decisive closing stages.
Spain ultimately produced the tournament’s most complete performance. They were not the highest-scoring team, did not create the most big chances and scored slightly below their xG. Nevertheless, they generated sufficient attacking opportunities, converted key chances and conceded only once throughout the competition. They also maintained their structure during critical periods and scored decisive late goals against Portugal, Belgium and Argentina.
The tournament therefore demonstrated that process creates the opportunity to succeed, execution converts that opportunity, and late-game control protects the result. Spain combined all three more effectively than any other team and were deservedly crowned world champions.

Big-chance conversion was calculated as:
(Big Chances Scored ÷ Big Chances Created) × 100
Big Chances Scored was derived by subtracting Big Chances Missed from Big Chances Created. Attacking and defensive relationships were examined using simple linear regression, with Goals Scored compared with Big Chances Created and Goals Conceded compared with xGA.
All team totals reflect complete tournament performances. Penalty-shootout goals were excluded from team goal totals, while extra-time goals and match statistics were included.
