Barcelona vs Real Betis: Tactical Analysis

Performance Analysis

Barcelona’s Home Finale: Tactical Takeaways.

  1. First half:

Barcelona set-up in a 4-2-3-1 attacking and started off strong with their first attacking threat within the opening 20-seconds with Real Betis also threatening on the counter.

The game started at a frantic pace before settling into a rhythm. Barcelona managed to keep possession more often during the first half. The first goal came through a freekick taken right outside the box by Raphinha Dias Belloli. A. Valles’s instincts betrayed him and he dived to the right a fraction too early which resulted in the simple shot resulting in a goal. Which was a well-deserved goal for FC Barcelona. The first half ended with no real threat from Betis while Barcelona continuously dominated the ball possession in the Betis’s half.

Second Half:

The second half began slowly but Betis with the addition of Isco now seemed much more capable of circulating the ball within themselves but Bellerin’s mistake to find a reasonable pass resulted in Raphinha stealing the ball in the final-third and scoring a straight forward Goal. Isco scored a penalty in the 69-min giving Betis fans a spoonful of hope but after another four min Joao Cancelo scored a banger from outside the box annihilating any hope that was left for Betis fans.

Individual Performances:

Lewandowski:

Lewandowski seemed energetic and in-control in his final game at the Camp Nou as a Barcelona player but couldn’t find the back of the net. Robert deserves all the flowers for his incredible four-year stint at Barcelona. 119 goals in 191 appearances. Unreal for someone who joined the club aged 33. A True Legend!

Joan Garcia:

Joan Garcia seemed to be present, eliminating the danger before it became solid. Although not tested much. Got his well deserved rest last week against Deportivo. Surely a worthy contender for the Zamora Trophy. Make no mistake, the best at the moment in La-Liga.

Joao Cancelo:

Cancelo delivered an untouchable performance. If Barcelona fail to sign him permanently, it would be a grave mistake on their side. 15 Million for someone of this quality is a steal and he clearly has 2-3 good seasons left in him.

Jules Kounde:

Not an ideal performance but showed glimpses of greatness. Although let Abde through sometimes but minimalized his difference making tendencies. Seemed in-control making those overlapping and under-lapping runs considering Rooney was not at his best. His presence on the wing gave Raphinha the freedom to move inside and often times even left-half space to help Fermin Lopez. Barcelona should have faith in him or even if they are to sell him it should not be for anything less than 60-70 million.

Rooney Bardghji:

Rooney seemed lost, heavy touches, no runs in behind and nearly no attacking threat from the right side during the time he was on the pitch. This was his opportunity to prove he can be a worthy backup for Lamine Yamal. Which he clearly did not capitalize on.

Pedri Gonzalez:

Pedri’s performance was not ideal but trustworthy. You could feel the fatigue from the other side of the screen. Played his passes nice, made some mistakes but although circulated the ball nicely. His duty was not efficieny it was presence. Finding outlets when none existed. People seem to forget that he is also a human and on top of that a human who has played more than 2k-minutes this season.

Marc Bernal:

Bernal seems ready to start every game. Provided Barcelona with much needed defensive solidity, maintained the team structure, intercepted dangerous passes and circulated the ball nicely. I personally got flashbacks of Sergio Busquets. Climbing over Frenkie in the pecking order is difficult but not impossible for someone with this much talent.

Pablo Gavi:

Gavi seemed sharp, made the tactical fouls, intercepted dangerous passes early but gave away a penalty which in my opinion was questionable but still he has to be more precise about his decisions in the box.

Tactical Tweaks from Hansi Flick:

Barcelona set up in a 4-2-3-1 which with possession changed into a 3-2-5( Attacking) when Kounde and Cancelo were pinned wide and forward. Bernal or Gavi dropped deep and formed a back three with Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin. In the season 24/25 this duty was often fulfilled by  Frenkie De Jong. Raphina to attack the right or left half space with Fermin often times compensating the gaps left by Raphina’s fluidity. This freedom resulted in two goals by Raphina Dias Belloli . Barcelona got a 3-1 victory in front of their home fans.

Conclusion:

Overall a good performance from Barcelona, they seemed in control offensively and defensively.  A Questionable Penalty decision from the Ref took the opportunity of a Clean sheet away from Barcelona. The big positive to take away from this game for Barcelona is that they have successfully defended their fortress this whole LaLiga campaign. Unbeaten in all 19 matches of LALIGA.
